Shri Bharat Mandir in Rishikesh is a famous temple and one of the most ancient temples in Uttarakhand. This temple is located in the middle of Rishikesh city, and it is only two kilometers from the Rishikesh railway station and one kilometer from the Rishikesh bus stand.

It is dedicated to Lord Hrishikesh Narayan, who is Lord Vishnu. It is one of the holy temples in Uttarakhand, and it is believed that it is the oldest temple in the city. In 789 AD, Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya had reinstalled the idol of the presiding God in the temple on the occasion of Basant Panchami. 

Since that time, the reinstallation process of the deity has been followed in the temple every year on the occasion of Basant Panchami. During this time, the Shaligram is brought to the Mayakund located near the temple for a bath. Then a splendid procession is organized to reinstall the idol in the temple. 

According to beliefs, if any person takes 108 rounds of lord Hrishikesh Narayan and seeks blessings at his uncovered feet on the day of Akshaya Tritiya, all wishes of that person will get fulfilled. It is also believed that Bharat Mandir is equivalent to the pilgrimage site Badrinath. 

Bharat mandir is mentioned in different Hindu epics such as Shrimadbhagwat, Vaman Puran, Mahabharat, Narsingh Puran, And Vishnu Puran. 

Mythology And History About Bharat Mandir Rishikesh 

According to mythology, the Pandavas and Draupadi visited this place after Mahabharat and worshiped lord Hrishikesh Narayan here. They also stayed here for some time on their way to heaven. It is also believed that Bharat Mandir, along with other temples in this area, was converted to Buddha Monasteries during the period of Ashoka. 

A piece of a statue found during the excavation is said to be of lord buddha, and it is placed before the temple under the banyan tree. There are many stories related to the temple in different Hindu epics. 

Top Attractions Near Bharat Mandir 

Apart from the temple, there is a museum in this area. In this museum, you can find decorated bricks, sculptures, pottery, and other historical items found during excavation. The temple has several old and sacred trees that have high importance in Hindu Mythology. 

Vat Vriksh, Pipal Vriksh, And Bail Vriksh are these trees, and they are more than 250 years old. As per beliefs, these three trees indicate Tridev – Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, And Lord Shiva. 

Ganga Aarti is another attraction in this area which is performed at different ghats of the Ganga River. Ganga Aarti Rishikesh’s timings are 6 pm to 7 pm every day. The popular ghats for attending Ganga Aarti are Triveni Ghat and Parmarth Niketan ashram. 

Other tourist attractions near Bharat Mandir are Lakshman Jhula, Ram Jhula, Swarg Ashram, Muni Ki Reti, Garud Chatti Waterfalls, etc. 

How To Reach Bharat Mandir 

This temple is situated in the heart of Rishikesh, so you can visit the temple by taxi or shared auto. It is only two kilometers from the Rishikesh railway station and 19 kilometers from the Dehradun airport. It is only two kilometers away from the Rishikesh bus stand.
